17 Arrested

The Philippine National Police (PNP) said Sunday it arrested 17 people after a violent protest in Mendiola, Manila, where demonstrators allegedly threw stones and set tires on fire during an anti-corruption rally.

Police said about 400 individuals gathered at the corner of Ayala and Romualdez Streets, where protesters torched a trailer truck. Firefighters and police quickly contained the situation, and investigators are preparing charges against the suspects now held by the Manila Police District.

The PNP appealed to the public to refrain from violence, stressing that such actions put lives at risk and weaken the purpose of peaceful protest.
The clash began when unidentified youths ignited tires in front of a shipping container used as a barricade.

Protesters also threw bottles, paint, and rocks at police. A rock struck DZBB reporter Manny Vargas in the face, injuring him while he covered the incident live.
