Cardinal David rejects internet gambling

Cardinal Pablo Virgilio “Ambo” David rejected the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp.’s proposal to regulate internet gambling, claiming the social costs outweigh the profits.
David compared addiction to gambling to “modern-day slavery” and defended PAGCOR’s stand on keeping online gambling legal.
He argued that the government could regulate all other sources of addiction if the argument is revenue.
David also raised doubts about PAGCOR’s plan to create a system that would prohibit youths’ access to online gambling.
He argued that addiction to online gambling is closely related to addiction to social media and that everyone is “vulnerable.”
He emphasized that addiction to online gambling is “so closely related to addiction to social media” and that everyone is “vulnerable” to such addiction.
