BSP orders the removal of gambling links

The BSP directed e-wallet and payment app companies to stop in-app links to gambling websites by August 16 to curb online betting.
Some MPs warn it is a growing menace, endangering families and young people, urging swift action to protect communities from harm.
The BSP or central bank grants applicants a grace period to comply, allowing gamblers to withdraw funds from gaming accounts before enforcement begins.
Senators Alan Peter Cayetano and Joel Villanueva questioned the grace period, warning that internet gambling poses an increasing and serious national threat.
Sen. Juan Miguel Zubiri warned that online gambling crimes and addiction may surpass banned POGO offenses, including human trafficking, torture, scams, and exploitation.
Sen. Erwin Tulfo, committee chair, urged a total shutdown of online gambling, citing its severe societal issues and harmful effects nationwide.
He stressed the urgent need for comprehensive legislation to address these challenges effectively and safeguard vulnerable populations from exploitation and harm.
Senators agreed to take immediate action to reduce online gambling risks and protect the community from its harmful, far-reaching, and detrimental impacts.
