A landmine near the Cambodian border has gravely wounded a Thai soldier, only days after the two nations reached a ceasefire agreement in response to last month’s fatal border fighting.

While patrolling 1 km from Ta Moan Thom Temple in Thailand, a soldier stepped on a device, injuring his ankle.

Thai army spokesman Major General Winthai Suvaree said the incident proved Cambodia breached international agreements, including the Ottawa Convention.

Thailand would defend itself under the law if ceasefire breaches and Cambodian incursions causing casualties persist in the future.

The Cambodian Ministry of National Defence denied the charge, insisting it has never utilized, manufactured, or placed new landmines.

Regional observers fear the escalating tensions between the two nations could lead to further military confrontations and destabilize the area.

Leaders urgently need to pursue diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the landmine situation and reaffirm commitments to peace and cooperation.
