Moreno slams

Manila Mayor Isko Moreno on Sunday night condemned the individuals police arrested during protests along Recto Avenue, calling them “utak adik” and “utak talangka” for their violent actions.

The Manila Police District apprehended more than 70 people, including 20 minors, while nearly 90 officers suffered injuries during the clashes. Moreno said one officer required surgery.

“Police will charge everyone we apprehend. They will pay the price, both criminally and civilly,” Moreno said, pledging accountability for all involved.

Moreno questioned the protesters’ intentions, saying they did not stage a legitimate rally. “These were not real rallyists. They gathered at night and damaged public and private property,” he explained.

He clarified that officers did not fire any shots and confirmed that no one died during the incident. Moreno praised police for exercising maximum tolerance despite the attacks and said the critically endangered officer has stabilized.

The clashes escalated when the group, mostly teenagers, attacked several establishments, hurled stones, bottles, and human waste at police, set fires, and ransacked a Sogo Hotel branch along Recto Avenue.

Despite the Recto violence, the Philippine National Police said nationwide anti-corruption rallies remained “generally peaceful.” Acting PNP Chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. reported isolated disruptions but emphasized that most rallies proceeded smoothly because participants cooperated with authorities.
